10 Tips for a Healthy Mouth

Ten tips for parents to help build a healthy mouth for their children

1. Before your baby has teeth, wipe the gums gently with a clean wet cloth after the last feeding. This will help establish a routine for cleaning the mouth early in life.
2. If your baby sleeps with a bottle or sippy cup at naptime, fill it with WATER ONLY. Mild, formula, or diluted juice in a bottle or sippy cup will cause BABY BOTTLE TOOTH DECAY if they fall asleep with it or walk around with it all day long!
3. If your baby normally falls asleep while feeding, brush his or her teeth before feeding.
4. Lift your baby’s lip and watch for changes in colour, lines or spots on your child’s teeth as these may be signs of problems
5. As soon as the first tooth appears, start brushing your baby’s teeth with water in the morning (optional ) and at night time (most important) and have them drink some water which will help rinse the mouth.
6. Begin flossing at least once a day once your child’s back teeth are touching.
7. Let your child watch you brushing your teeth and assit your child’s tooth brushing.
8. To prevent spreading germs that cause tooth decay, do not put anything in your child’s mouth that has been in your mouth. Don’t share spoons, cups, toothbrushes, or but the baby’s soother in your mouth to “clean” it.
9. Limit chewy, sticky snacks such as raisins and granola bars. “They may be healthy but they are the worst kind of food for growing teeth” says children’s specialist dentist Dr McConnachie.
10. Visit your dentist by the age of ONE YEAR or when the FIRST TEETH appear. The dentist can have a look at the new teeth and inform the parents of the above tips for a healthy mouth. Take your child to the dentist for regular check ups to make sure there are no problems since cavities often don’t hurt at all.
